Refreshment Port: Spicy Chicken and Cheddar Poppers

When visiting WDW, everyone has their own method of dining throughout their vacation. Living nearby allows me to try items that may be overlooked by someone who has limited amount of time. I found myself in such a situation recently while in World Showcase. I didn’t want the standard fare from Electric Umbrella, and the quick service options in World Showcase weren’t jumping out to me. I wanted to try something new, when I remembered that Refreshment Port had an item that was introduced around last spring that had caught my eye: Spicy Chicken and Cheddar Poppers.

This was as good of a time as any to try them, so I placed an order. The CM warned me that they are very spicy, which I was happy to hear. Now it was a matter of if the spiciness would live up to said warning. The poppers are served with fries, and there are 6 relatively large poppers that are served with each order. It took a while to receive my order, but everything was being made fresh, so I can’t complain (although I hope they have batches consistently coming out of the fryer during busy times). The condiments available were oddly only mayonnaise and ketchup; I didn’t spot any mustard, and I didn’t bother to ask, either. I decided I would take my food over to the seating area outside of Rose & Crown and grab some mustard and vinegar from Yorkshire County Fish Shop.

I bit into the first popper and it had retained its temperature during my short walk. I could see inside there was a lot of bright orange cheddar flecked with spices and jalapenos. The molten cheese was housed by a thin layer of chicken meat to which the crunchy breading adhered. It didn’t taste very spicy at first, but then it started to creep up on me. They surprisingly were pretty spicy. The fries were standard and were fine, but I really wasn’t in the mood for them. I ate a few and was done.

While far from fine dining, the poppers were surprisingly good for a frozen, fried item. They spice was a welcome one, and the portion size was enough for a quick meal or a snack to share to hold you over until your ADR. They’re a nice change from standard chicken nuggets, and I would definitely order these again.

Do you ever stop by Refreshment Port for more than just their beverages? Is there a food item there you think they do well?

  1. That’s one of the things I eat most often in Epcot, because it’s close to Canada and the UK, and I’m always around there. I really love these because they are so spicy. The first time I tried them, I was afraid they’d explode and be very messy and greasy, but they’re not at all. So yummy. Great, now I’m craving them!

  2. I was nervous about a grease explosion too, but was impressed in how “well constructed” the are. Definitely easy eats for wandering between Off Kilter and British Revolution!
