Eat Like an Avenger

Okay. I’ve avoided this for a week now. I have not seen The Avengers, nor do I really care to. Matt can’t stand the super hero thing. I’m more of a Batman kind of girl, and I don’t even see those movies in the theaters. Sure, I have a small comic book collection, but they’re pretty much all on Slave Labor Graphics and feature artists like Jhonen Vasquez and Roman Dirge.  Oh, and The Hulk will always be Lou Ferrigno in my heart.  What I can’t look past is the attention the shawarma scene is getting. Just Google “the avengers shawarma” and see what I mean if you haven’t seen the movie.

At Ro Ro’s Chicken — a famed Lebanese joint in Hollywood — the manager says shawarma sales jumped 80% in the days after the movie opened. We’re told the same thing happened a few years back when a baba ghanouj joke was featured in “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.” – TMZ

So without further ado, get out there and get some shawarma! Tangierine Cafe in Morocco at Epcot is our top pick, featuring both lamb and chicken shawarma.

The Fountain at The Dolphin also has a Lamb Gyro, but it’s not nearly the quality you’ll find at Tangierine Cafe.

If you’re not on property, check out Middle East Market on Orange Blossom Trail, not too far from the Florida Mall.

Lamb & Beef Gyros Pita

Not to sound like Hipster Mermaid, but we’ve been enjoying shawarma for years, and we want you to join in if you haven’t already! Be sure to swing by Tangierine Cafe at Epcot – it’s our favorite quick service on property. If you’re in Orlando and not headed to Epcot, check out this list of shawarma establishments over at Tasty Chomps!

Let us know your favorite places to get shawarma in the comments, wherever they may be! Do you have any tips for those in Disneyland or perhaps Vegas?(We’re headed to both in a few months! :) )

  1. Haven’t watched the movie yet and will probably only watch it when the DVD is on sale… LOL…
But, I love shawarma! I don’t know if it’s the way it’s cooked or the spices… or a combination of everything… All I know is that it’s good stuff!! I have had it at Tangierine and I agree with you, it is really good! The only think I always skip is the raw onions…

  2. Yeah – we’re Netflix people here for the most part! I don’t mind the raw onions, but I know that they can be very strong. Sometimes you get someone that’s heavy handed with them, too. Time to get over to Epcot!

  3. Hoping it’s better than the actual sit down with service Morrocco at Epcot restaurant. Awful.

  4. “Time to get over to Epcot”…. that is something I hope I’ll be able to say in a few years… We visit the parks at least once a year but that is far from enough… Our plan is to move to the Orlando area within the next 4-5 years… Any advice on best areas to live in?

  5. AW – I enjoyed my two experiences at Restaurant Marrakesh and loved the items I ordered. Sorry to hear your experience was negative.

Ricardo – I can certainly recommend NOT living in Hunter’s Creek. Crime has been significantly on the rise over the past few years to the point that we moved! Celebration is awesome, but expensive. Dr. Phillips and Winter Park are also nice.

  6. We’re not really picky but it was dry chicken, soggy rice, just really bad. Stale bread. :(

Love those tips. Would be great to have more info on neighborhoods, schools, etc.

  7. I recommend http://therelocatedtourist.com/ and Amy’s experiences regarding moving to the Central Florida area. She’s a FANTASTIC resource!

  8. Yes, I saw that. I er, we want more!

  9. I like shawarma and look forward to seeing The Avengers this weekend. I very much want to sample the Morocco pavilion’s food offerings, but as we usually visit during the Food & Wine festival, it’s hard for us to make time for food that will ultimately be there “next time.”

One thing that really has me puzzling about this post, though … TMZ was joking about the Zohan reference, right? Goodness, I hope so.

  10. I totally understand why you’d want to skip other restaurants at F&W. I’ve yet to be really impressed by the offerings at Morocco’s kiosk, though. For roughly the same price of two food items, you can get a wrap to split that’s much better quality. I’m really hoping they nix the dry, flavorless kefta and perhaps add a shawarma slider to the menu instead. It’s something that’s on Cafe’s menu as a platter option, so it shouldn’t be a stretch for them.

And I think they may be serious about the Zohan thing. Which means people actually saw it. Ew.
