Backlot Express: Buffalo Chicken Breast Nuggets & Chili Dog

The interwebs have been abuzz with some new menu options at Hollywood Studios. We visited the park without the intent of trying any of the items, instead wanting to grab lunch at Mama Melrose’s. They typically open at 12pm, but they had opened a bit earlier on Labor Day. We tried to get a walk-in but were turned away, being told they were booked solid. We found this hard to believe as the park was pretty empty. Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater was offering a 10 minute wait, and we were also told 50’s Prime Time Café was dead for their lunch business. Starving, we headed over to Backlot Express to get a quick bite.

I decided to give the Buffalo Chicken Breast Nuggets a try along with the fries. I was warned that the dish was VERY spicy and that several people had returned it for being too hot. If you’ve ever had a standard buffalo wing pretty much anywhere, that’s about the heat level to expect. I’m not sure which brand of hot sauce is used, but these are no hotter than some Tabasco.

The chicken breast nuggets they use seem to be different than their regular ones, more uniform in their oval as opposed to the craggier, “plain” counterpart. They seemed to be a bit tougher in texture, too. Given the two nuggets available, if I wanted some heat, I’d probably order these again simply because their barbecue sauce available, which is my sauce of choice, doesn’t wow me.

The fries were served hot, but I would have liked to see a bit more color on them.

Matt ordered the Chili Dog and added cheese. As you can see, they offer shredded cheese here. Another option to add is onions.

The hot dog buns are a bit too hearty for these hot dogs, but with the toppings, a white, squishy bun wouldn’t hold up. Matt ended up using a knife and for an forgoing the roll for the most part. After he finished eating, he noted, “Well, that was pretty gross.”

He snacked on a few of his fries as we wrapped up the meal.

If you find yourself dining here, I’d skip the hot dogs and opt for nuggets, or perhaps their 1/3 lb Angus Onion Straw Bacon Cheeseburger. And while I haven’t tried them, their salads sound like tasty, lighter options.

Do you find yourself dining at Backlot Express when at the Studios? Do you have a favorite menu item from the restaurant?

  1. Maybe it’s just me, but with all the food choices at Disney a hot dog of any sort would be pretty far down on my list of things to try! It’s never good to end a meal with “that was pretty gross”! LOL

  2. That’s what I said when he mentioned ordering one! “Um, are you SURE about that?!” Haha.

  3. I’ve eaten there before although I can’t remember what I ate… probably not very good since I can’t remember… But the menu items that I see in the picture are not very enticing…

  4. It’s definitely a quick-service menu, and while nothing spectacular, it’s probably one of the better options for quick-service in the Studios. I think the options are better than ABC Commissary or Pizza Planet, the only other two quick service locations that offer indoor seating, too.

  5. My wife and I had the grilled vegetable sandwich this past week and we were both big fans of it. We could have easily split one between the two of us if we weren’t so hungry at the time. We would recommend this sandwich to anyone.

  6. I might have to give it a try as well. I’ve wanted to, but typically stick to table service at the Studios. :)

  7. I’m also a fan of the grilled vegetable sandwich. There was a span of a couple of years that if the husband & I ate at the Studios, we’d eat at Sci Fi, otherwise we’d take the boat over to Epcot. The discovery of the veggie sandwich was a pleasant surprise.

  8. Awesome! I’m excited to try it now. And it’s difficult to want to eat at the Studios (primarily quick serve) with Epcot a leisurely boat ride away.
