One place I enjoy grabbing a quick bite while wandering World Showcase is La Cantina de San Angel. Seating can be tricky, with many guests scoping out and scooping up tables as they become available. You certainly need to be swift on your feet to snag one sometimes!
I stopped by for an item I’ve ordered before, but haven’t reviewed here on the blog yet: Empanadas de Queso. The dish is served with three fried corn masa empanadas filled with Chihuahua cheese and green sauce (AKA Salsa Verde). Alongside is a healthy order of corn tortilla chips. On past visits, the chips have been tri-colored, which I don’t care for, so I was happy to see them without blue and red dyes added. While I’m sure you could ask for it, it would be nice for the chips to come with a side of their Pico de Gallo like their taco dishes do.
My order on this visit came served with a LOT more crumbled queso fresco on top than the first time I ordered the dish, and I certainly am not complaining about that! The green sauce is a bit thick here and very mild in flavor.
The Chihuahua cheese filling is also very mild, and for those who have never had it, can be described as mozzarella-like. It’s a bit salty and very melty.
Salsa Verde (a different version than served on the empanadas) as well as a Chipotle Salsa can be found at the service station if you like a little more variety.
If you are nervous about Mexican food due to spices or heat, and are looking for mild and familiar flavors, the Empanadas de Queso are a great option. There is plenty of food here to make a meal for one or a hearty snack for two. And if you’ve been drinking margaritas while at the pavilion, these might help prevent that tequila hangover!
This won’t be the last time I order this delicious dish!

nice, we go often but getting $$$. going to stop going now.
These are pretty tasty! I’ve gotten them a few times when in need of a quick meal, and they’re a great meatless option. Probably not the healthiest idea, hehe, but I dig them. And yes – you can request the pico on the side with them! I also like that they have two types of self-service salsas, not very spicy unfortunately, but flavourful.
I do miss the “Wet burrito” entree they used to have before conversion into the new restaurant. They did a veggie/bean version upon request. I’m glad they still have a good option here though!
Andy – Yes, the items here are on the pricier side for quick service.
Jasmine – You’re right about the salsas. They are mild but do have a nice flavor. I remember ordering a few of the dishes before the conversion, but I think I’m happier now!
I love empanadas! I may need to try those today if we can get to Epcot!!
Me too! Simple and tasty.
We tried those empanadas last year and they were amazing! My favorite thing to get there is the Beef Brisket Tacos. It is expensive for quick service, but I think it’s totally worth it.
I agree; it’s totally worth it! I can rely on La Cantina for consistency it seems, too, in regard to quality. Much like Tangierine Cafe!
