Sassagoula Floatworks: Gumbo

Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory at Port Orleans French Quarter serves up a handful of southern favorites, such as jambalaya and beignets, as well as more standard menu items such as burgers and salads. I stopped by to try a cup of their gumbo to see how it compared to the version served at the nearby River Roost at Port Orleans French Quarter (and presumably is the same version served at its adjacent Boatwrights Dining Hall)

This version seems to rely on shredded chicken as opposed to the pieces I found at River Roost, but there was still plenty of chicken and Andouille pieces throughout the rich, flavorful broth. There was a little heat to the gumbo, but was not overbearing. There were also nicely cooked veggies, including okra, in the gumbo.

A bit of rice was placed at the bottom of the to-go cup, but it didn’t get mushy. For $3.49, it was a warming, hearty dish for the price. I’d happily order it again.

Do you ever visit Sassagoula Floatworks for breakfast, lunch or dinner? You can get the beignets at any meal, but do you ever try some of their other menu items?

  1. We’ve never had the beignets at Sassagoula Floatworks and we’ve stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter for 13 weeks from 2004 to 2007! However, we really like their gumbo, greens, and blackeyed peas (in fact, we made special trips over there for a few New Year’s Days when it was the most logical place to get our greens & peas for luck!).

  2. You’ll have to try the beignets the next time you’re over there! I need to try to spend some more time there to sample some of the entrees. :)

  3. I’ve ordered the beignets twice and I think both times I got a bad batch. Both batches, separate days didn’t puff much and were really touch. I’ve seen pictures of other peoples orders and mine didn’t look as good. I am looking forward to trying them again. My daughter loves the quesadillas and their soups are great too.

  4. Mmmm…beignets… The gumbo looks good. I am super picky about gumbo (I’m from Louisiana and nothing compares to my family’s recipe) so I haven’t tried it. Next time, it’s on the list!

  5. Tracy – I’m so sorry to hear that happened! I hope the next time they come out perfectly for you!

Dawn – I’m completely new to gumbo, so I don’t know how this compares to the stuff you probably get from Louisiana! From what I recall, I might have enjoyed River Roost’s better, but this one at Sassagoula didn’t disappoint me. I need to find a good recipe to make at home to test! :)
