Tamu Tamu Refreshments’ Roasted Chicken Salad Sandwich

In the Africa section of Animal Kingdom, quick service restaurant Tamu Tamu Refreshments recently received a slight menu revamp. While the Slow-Roasted Pulled Beef Sandwich remains (highly recommended!), the Turkey and Swiss on Focaccia and Tandori Chicken Salad have disappeared. In their places are a Roasted Chicken Salad Sandwich and a South African Quinoa Salad. My intent of visiting was to try the Quinoa Salad, which honestly sounds quite delicious (see the menu below), but called an audible and decided on the Roasted Chicken Salad Sandwich.

The sandwich consists of diced chicken and dried fruit blended with mild African spices. It’s serviced on multigrain bread along with house-made chips or apple slices. I opted for the chips, as I really enjoyed them when I had the beef sandwich last summer.

The sandwich is quite large, taking up a good portion of the plate. The multigrain bread has a thick cut to it, with a soft interior and firm edges.

The shredded lettuce leaves a bit to be desired; a leaf would have been nicer and much more manageable. The tomatoes were fine, but it’s not quite tomato season yet! :)

There were two scoops of chicken salad on my sandwich, which would have required some spreading for adequate coverage on the bread. Any African spice in the salad is indeed mild, and the only dried fruit I saw were a few flecks of mango that seemed to have reconstituted a bit in the mayonnaise. Still, the salad itself was pretty good.

Eating the sandwich as a sandwich was a bit messy, and the bread was a bit heavy for me, so I opted to use the chips to scoop up the chicken salad instead. I really like the chips here as they are seasoned and have a little sweetness to them, along with a nice crunch.

While the sandwich overall was pretty good in and of itself, it wasn’t a standout that I’d have to go back for. On my next visit, I’d like to try the South African Quinoa Salad, or revisit the Slow-Roasted Pulled Beef Sandwich.

Have you tried the Roasted Chicken Salad Sandwich or any other items on Tamu Tamu Refreshments’ menu?

  1. I love eating at Tamu Tamu because of the great scenery and atmosphere! I got the Slow-Roasted Pulled Beef Sandwich last year and it was good, albeit a bit small for my liking. I didn’t try the chips then by now I’m wishing I had! They look delicious!

  2. I really like the chips there; the seasoning on them sets them apart from house-made chips elsewhere on property (not saying the others aren’t delicious, mind you :) ).

  3. Holy cats! You really need to get the quinoa salad and let me know how it is…the menu description sounds amazing!

  4. Okay! Promise I will! It does sound delicious – I was flying solo that day, so two entrees would have been a bit much, especially since I had another stop to make after AK. :)

  5. Ok, we are adding a swing by Tamu for our November trip- this looks promising!

  6. It’s certainly something a bit different from what you find on property! :)

  7. Just recently had the qunioa salad and it was refreshing, filling, and absolutely delicious. I cleared my plate!

  8. I’ll certainly be trying it next visit!
