2014 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival: Jardin de Fiestas

Between the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival and Food & Wine, I ALWAYS look forward to the offerings at the kiosk found in Mexico. The latter usually boasts a long line, but I’ve noticed this hasn’t been the case my last few stops at Epcot for Jardin de Fiestas. From the official website:

“Make your way near the Mexico Pavilion where the tapas are spring light and cooked just right. Donโ€™t miss your chance to take part in this festival of flavors, complete with savory tacos and mouthwatering cocktails.”

I enjoyed last year’s Taco de Carnitas and Tostada de Jaiba, so I was looking forward to both the Taco al Pastor and Quesadilla de Hongos con Queso.

The Taco al Pastor features a Corn Tortilla filled with Achiote-marinated Pork garnished with Grilled Diced Pineapple, Onions, and Cilantro. The tortilla was quite stuffed with all the fillings, but the overall tortilla is smaller than I imagine many guests anticipate.

Matt and I thought the meat had a nice, although relatively mild, flavor and paired nicely with the grilled pineapple. I didn’t really get any onions, but the cilantro was a bright addition. At $5.50, this taco doesn’t come cheap, especially for the overall size and cost of main ingredients, but it’s about what I expected based on menus at this kiosk over the years. This is something I would like to recreate and tweak at home. How long until we get a Flower & Garden Cookbook? ;)

The Quesadilla de Hongos con Queso (Flour Tortilla filled with Mushrooms and Cheese) rings in 25 cents less than the taco, and size-wise is much larger, but it’s filling is relatively simple, with mushrooms that had been cooked with some onions and sprinkled with a bit of cilantro before hitting the flat top to melt the cheese.

Because of the mushrooms, Matt wouldn’t touch this. Personally I liked it, but I didn’t feel like it was something I couldn’t easily throw together at home. It also could have used some hot sauce or something as the flavors here are fairly mild and tame. Perhaps some of the sauces from the adjacent La Cantina de San Angel would have helped.

Overall, I might go back for another Taco al Pastor, even being at the higher end of F&G pricing. It’s nice that there’s a vegetarian option with the Quesadilla de Hongos con Queso (especially when it’s normally just a dessert option), but as an omnivore, I’d put my dollars toward the taco and its more developed flavors.

  1. The pork taco was delicious. You’re spot on when you say there was a fair amount of filling but the taco tortilla was tiny. We still got about two bites a piece on this one and the Mexico booth continues to be a favorite of ours.

  2. In general, I’m a big fan of Mexican food (it’s one of those foods I always crave, where Matt’s is Chinese), so I’m always stopping by Mexico to try their offerings. The four bites there were at least were hearty thanks to the amount of filling! Glad you liked it!
