Snacks from Japan: Tohato Beano Asari Butter Aji

Our “Snacks from…” series treats you to different snacks found in the World Showcase pavilions at Epcot. Find more reviews here! Continuing our series, we head to Mitsukoshi in the Japan Pavilion!

Today’s Snack from Japan may have an unfamiliar name and flavor, Tohato Beano Asari Butter Aji, but the product itself may not be so unfamiliar. You’ve likely seen similar in your supermarket, a baked version made by Harvest Snaps called Snapea Crisps. They are a Calbee product, which made the first version of this snack I ever tried, Calbee Saya Snow Pea Crisps. This brand, however, is made by Tohato, and are Asari Butter Aji flavor.

What is Asari Butter Aji Flavor, you ask? From what I can decipher, asari is clam (as you can see on the package), and aji may be short for “aftertaste.” Needless to say, Matt had no desire to try one of these. 🙂

Looking to the ingredients, there is no clam flavoring in this, but the Top Shell Extract Powder may be similar to GreenShell Mussel Extract Powder, which is made from mussels. There is also Shrimp Powder. Also, looking at the Total Fat in the nutritional information, the are probably fried as opposed to baked, like its brethren.

So how did they taste? Pretty similar to Calbee’s versions, with a “green,” slightly sweet pea flavor. There was a touch of sea-like flavor, but it wasn’t very strong. They were light in texture with a similarly light snap.

In all, I was hoping for more of a clam flavor, even though I’m not real big on them, but I was kind of relieved they didn’t have that. You’d probably be better off trying just the “regular” variety from the supermarket and save some fat and calories. I don’t see these making their way into my shopping basket at Mitsukoshi again.
