Lunch at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe

Matt and I are no strangers to Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe. We’ve stopped in several times over the years for a quick lunch, and we found ourselves there once again with our group while visiting Magic Kingdom. The menu is small and simple, making your meal decision a relatively quick one. One of the draws of Pecos Bill’s, however, is the toppings bar, where you are free to fix whatever you order with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, banana peppers, sauteed onions and mushrooms, assorted condiments, and, of course, cheese sauce.

Even with a limited menu, Matt was going back and forth between the Barbecued Pork Sandwich and the Deluxe 1/3lb. Angus Cheeseburger. He ended up with the latter when it was time to order. We last ordered this burger in the beginning of 2012, and the results were not good. Since so much time had passed, it was worth another look. Long gone are the stale, nearly inedible wheat buns of yesteryear. As we’ve noted, they were phased out for the “premium” buns over the past couple years. Thank goodness!

This visit also provided a healthier dose of barbecue sauce. The onion rings were once again as expected from many of WDW counter service restaurants, with a slightly crispy batter and soft onion. The bacon is still the skinny, weak, nearly translucent stuff, but we didn’t expect anything more, and at least it provided a bit of smoky-salty variation to the burger. The cheese was well-melted on the burger patty, which fortunately wasn’t dried out. Kudos to Disney – I’ve definitely taken notice to the fact that, over the past few years, they’re not cooking their burgers into oblivions anymore (either that, or I’m really lucky and need to hop on the next flight to Vegas!).

I ordered the Taco Salad, which I recommend ordering from Pecos Bill over Tortuga Tavern. They are identical when served, but because Pecos’ has the better toppings bar.

I topped off my salad with lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes (with a few extra for Matt). I had taken it off the plate on which it was served and moved in on top of a few napkins. This allowed me to use a plate to gather additional toppings such as peppers and salsas to add once at my table. Overall, it was exactly as I anticipated, and while it didn’t quite hit the spot, I really can’t complain. (Well, I’ll complain about a piece gristle that felt like it nearly cracked a molar.)

Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe isn’t fancy, but it’s reliable. The food is relatively middle-of-the-road counter service for the parks; there’s nothing that’s a “must-have” that’s served here that you can’t find in the other parks, like the Lighthouse Sandwich at Columbia Harbour House. I still want to give the Southwest Salad a try, though, so that will be on my agenda for my next visit. As for service, the CM that took our order was polite and efficient, but I can’t quite say the same for the kitchen and the CMs that brought us our order. Perhaps the lunch rush was getting to them.  Regardless, it’s definitely on the radar as our Frontierland go-to for a quick meal that gets us out of the heat for a little while.
