Lunch at the Refurbished Capt. Cook’s

With major refurbishments occurring at the Polynesian Resort, Capt. Cook’s, the quick service restaurant located on the first floor of the Great Ceremonial House, reopened late last week. Matt and I stopped in to check it out, and it hasn’t changed substantially, but it certainly is refreshed and brighter.

Gone are the touch screen ordering kiosks. Instead, you place your order with a Cast Member. You can see their podium toward the middle of the photo below. From here, you receive your order ticket and collect your beverages and other goodies and head to the register. As before, there are places for two Cast Members to ring up your order, and you’ll receive a pager that will buzz when your food is ready.

As you may have heard, the self-serve Dole Whip machine is gone, but the frozen treat will make its return at the end of August at Pineapple Lanai, a new window that will be located in the courtyard.

Of course, we had to order some food! Matt is a big fan of Asian food, so the Udon Noodle Bowl with Beef stood out to him almost immediately. It’s described as Udon Noodles with Seasonal Vegetable on Bui Broth. He noted that he really liked the flavor broth, and the meat was tender. He said it was a dish that really hit the spot for him. Except the broccoli. That magically made it on to my plate. 😉

I was more interested trying the Chicken and Waffles, described as Crispy Buffalo Chicken Fritters on a Waffle topped with Romaine and Ranch Dressing. I would not consider Disney’s Chicken Breast Nuggets “fritters.” I was hoping for something more like the Spicy Chicken and Cheddar Poppers that used to be served at Refreshment Port in Epcot. These were just standard nuggets tossed in some Buffalo Sauce. There was nothing wrong with them, just not what I was anticipating.

The Romaine wasn’t necessary, and the little bit of Ranch didn’t really bring anything to the dish. The nuggets weren’t that spicy that they needed its cooling powers.

Without much of any type of sauce on the dish, the waffles grew a bit boring. They were served fresh, though, and had a nice flavor on their own, they just needed some moisture. I know, this is not a “traditional” Chicken and Waffles dish, much like the version served at ESPN Club (which I’d opt for over Capt. Cook’s), but I like that it’s an option and is a different rendition than Sleepy Hollow’s Sweet & Spicy Chicken Waffle Sandwich.

We did have a bit of an issue with our pager, as it never went off. After around 15-20 minutes, I went to the pickup counter with my receipt to ask about our order. The restaurant wasn’t too busy, and there were other guests that had arrived after us that were getting food. It seems our order may have gotten lost in the shuffle, and after about 5 minutes a CM brought me our food and was apologetic for the wait.

Overall, Matt’s Udon Noodle Bowl was more successful based on it’s execution. I’d consider the Chicken and Waffles again, but not before I try some of the other menu items (and revisit the Pork Nachos – it’s been too long!). The Coconut Curry Meatballs sound like they could be interesting, but I wonder if they are the same as the Thai Coconut Meatballs that were being served at Capt. Cook’s temporary location, which we tried not too long ago. Needless to say, we’ll be back. 🙂

What are you looking to ordering on your next visit to Capt. Cook’s?

  1. Glad to see some progress at the resort. I think I’m going to wait until the whole project is done before visiting…

  2. We are looking forward to trying to revamped Capt Cooks, seems like the menu has expanded too, although I wish they had kept the Grown Up Grilled Cheese. The old touch menu screens were a problem if a special order was needed, so think the new order system will be better. Sorry about the Chicken and Waffles, not what I’d expect them to be either!

  3. Andrew – That’s probably a wise idea. Right now the lobby is just walls, and there is so much construction it detracts in a big way. But if you need to stop in to Tambu Lounge for some reason, it’s worth a quick look around. :

Jane – I noticed it was off the menu at the temporary location as well. I really hope they do bring it back – and should – as right now the only as-is vegetarian offering on the menu is “Traditional Flatbread” which is just marinara and cheese.

The touch screens didn’t save any time, especially for people unfamiliar with them (as is seen at Be Our Guest and Contempo Cafe). Right now, there’s no set ordering queue, so I think that might be an issue during busier times. It would be easily resolved by setting up a temporary queue, but I can just imagine some of the “cutting in line” arguments that could ensue. That’s an issue even WITH designated lines sometimes!

  4. I read lots of Disney blogs, not sure how I missed the Poly renovation. We were in the World two weeks ago and made a special trip to the Poly for Dole Whip and were sorely disappointed. Not only no Dole Whip, but the hotel was so torn up it was unrecognizable. A total waste of time 😦

  5. Oh no! Hopefully every thing will be put back together by your next trip, making it a completely new experience to take in! Dole Whips are scheduled to be back at the end of the month, at least. 🙂

  6. I had the noodle bowl. It was quite possibly the worst thing I have ever had at Disney. I don’t think I have ever eaten something so salty before.

  7. So sorry to hear that! We didn’t find it overly salted – perhaps there was a mishap with the batch you received. We’ve had our share of overly salty and just plain bad dishes on property ourselves, so I know it happens. Did you bring it back to ask for something else?
