Gasparilla Island Grill’s Sausage and Pepperoni Stromboli

It had been a little over a year since I last visited Gasparilla Island Grill at the Grand Floridian Resort, so since I was on my way via monorail to Magic Kingdom, I decided to stop in for a quick lunch.

The restaurant features two stations from which you can order, with one side featuring hot items like sandwiches and pizza, and the other featuring salads. There is also a bakery case and grab-and-go items for something a bit faster. One you order, you are given a ticket and a number to bring back you your table after paying at the register.

Since I hadn’t done any research on the Disney website prior to visiting, and the menu has seen some changes since it reopened back in January 2013 after its refurbishment. I considered the Cuban Panini but ultimately decided on the Sausage and Pepperoni Stromboli, described as Hand-stretched Dough stuffed with Sausage, Pepperoni, Onions, Peppers, Mushrooms, and Mozzarella.

Based on the picture, it looks like its supposed to be served with a side of marinara sauce, which I did not receive and am only noticing as I write this post. It’s probably just as well, as who knows how long it would have taken to receive it. From the time I placed my order until I received it, it took over 30 minutes. I wasn’t the only person waiting. I overheard another family cancel their order and ask for a refund. A manager was busy assisting another family and apologizing profusely for the wait time. It was busy, but by no means packed.

So back to the Stromboli. I wonder how long it was sitting before it was delivered to me. The top portion of the crust retained some crispness, but the bottom was fairly soggy. The temperature could have been hotter, but at least it wasn’t cold.

The fillings were fine. There was a lot of basil and an overwhelming scent of it was noticeable upon cutting it, which is fine for me because I like basil, but I know others don’t necessarily share that sentiment. Would I order it again? Probably not. It was okay for what it is, but not worth going out of the way for.

  1. Thanks! I’m staying at the GF for the first time in October (so exciting!!) I need advice on what to eat while I’m there…. sounds like maybe Gasparilla is worth skipping. I’ll be honest – the menu doesn’t really excite me. I would have considered the veggie Stromboli but I will probably skip it – assuming the sausage and the veggie is similar (in texture / sogginess).

  2. We’ve had some good items at Gasparilla in the past, so it might be worth the convenience if you don’t have anything else planned. But the veggie Stromboli would likely suffer the same fate it it’s sitting around waiting to be delivered since the veggies have a lot of water that would likely cook out. If you have more time for meals at the resort, I’d recommend Grand Floridian Cafe or even the lounge at at Citricos. 🙂
