It had been almost a year since my last visit to Beaches & Cream Soda Shop at the Yacht & Beach Club, and on a recent walk around Crescent Lake, I stopped by shortly after opening and was able to be seated at the bar for lunch almost immediately. I had been perusing the menus, and the Pork Belly Cuban Sandwich caught my eye. Frequent readers will know my love for Cuban Sandwiches, and Matt and I are both big fans of Pork Belly, be it from California Grill or served during Food & Wine Festival.
The Pork Belly Cuban Sandwich features Ham, Pork Belly, Swiss, Dill Pickle Relish, and Grain Mustard served on a Fresh-baked Sub Roll. Sandwiches are served with House-made Pickles and choice of French Fries or Fruit. I opted for fruit, as I knew the fries would be a bit too heavy. The food menu has changed quite a bit over the last year (more on that later).
A sub roll is no replacement for actual Cuban bread, but it stands up well to its fillings here. Some more toasting would have been nice, as the Swiss was only melted around the edges. You can see some of the pickle relish on the bottom of the loaf, and plenty of mustard on top. The latter was quite overpowering. In terms of meat, there was a hearty amount. (Note: the House-made Pickle on the side had a bit of sweetness to it.)
One thing I wasn’t crazy about was the Pork Belly (of all things…). It had been warmed, but the fat didn’t have that rendered, melt-away quality. I wasn’t looking for it to be crispy, per se, but this was just chewy, almost like gnawing on raw bacon. Trying to bite through the sandwich was definitely a feat. I probably got about 3/4 through one half of the sandwich before giving up.
I was a bit surprised to see just Watermelon as the fruit served, as usually you tend to see a mix of melons, watermelon, and sometimes grapes, but I wasn’t complaining. It hit the spot.
Here is the menu from my visit:
For reference. here is a look at the food menus about a year apart, side by side. The recent menu is on the left (click for larger):
So let’s bid a fond farewell to the Beaches Rachel Sandwich…
…the Pot Roast Sandwich…
…but at least you can still have the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque!
While I wasn’t crazy about the Pork Belly Sandwich, there are plenty of other items on the menu for which I would return. The Vegetarian Falafel has stuck through the change, and that might be next on the agenda, though the Beaches Chef Salad sounds quite good too. Hopefully I’ll see them the next time I decide to stop by!
