Lunch at Sunshine Seasons

On a recent visit to Epcot, Matt was in the mood for Sunshine Seasons. One of the nice things about the restaurant, which is located in The Land pavilion, is that there is a fairly large variety of items to suit most guests. Matt quickly glanced around at the options, and decided he wanted to order the Mongolian Beef, which is the main reason he wanted to visit. He headed over to the Asian station, while I headed to the adjacent Sandwich station.

Matt ordered the Mongolian Beef last year, and had it with Vegetable Fried Rice. He liked it enough to order the dish again, and, when given the option of Vegetable Fried Rice or Vegetable Stir-fried Noodle, he opted for the latter. The amount of meat in the dish was good, and the broccoli inevitably ended up on my plate (but not before a heavy dose of soy sauce was added). The vegetable retained some snap.

He also liked the noodles, and that massive piece of carrot ended up on my plate as well. It’s not a dish I’d order personally, but for Matt, with enough soy sauce, even some not-the-best Asian food will make him happy.

I stepped out of my comfort zone and ordered the Spicy Fish Tacos, which are topped with Cabbage Slaw and Poblano Pepper Aioli and served with Potato Salad (Cole Slaw is also provided as an option). I know, if you’ve been reading here for a while, you know fish is not my thing. Looking at them in the display case, it looked like there were enough flavors and textures going on that I decided to go for it. Looking at the plate, the color of the overall dish is a bit monochromatic and blah.

Between the Cabbage Slaw and Poblano Pepper Ailoi, there was a lot of moisture tucked into the tortilla. The first taco’s tortilla was starting to get soggy, and by the time I got to the second, which had also been sitting in the juices that fell from the first, it was a bit gummy.

While I didn’t ask which fish they use, I’m going to go out on a limb and say it was tilapia. This fish reminded me of the Ghost Pepper-Dusted Tilapia that we tried at Urban Farm Eats during the 2014  last year (it was also served during the 2015 Festival). One thing that differentiated this one from the Festival’s is that this dish indeed had a bit of lip-burning heat. It didn’t linger, but if spice isn’t your thing, I would skip this dish. There was a small amount of “fishiness” in the flavor, but with the slaw and aioli, it wasn’t bothersome to me.

The Potato Salad wasn’t your standard mayo-based or German-style. It was almost a mix between the two styles, but then Matt hit the nail on the head, saying it was “a potato salad with pasta salad seasoning.” The potatoes were evenly cooked and retained some firmness, and the other vegetables added some crunch.

Neither of us could finish our meals. This was the first meal of the day for both of us, and we went in on the hungry side. When Matt started to get full, he focused on eating the beef, leaving behind some vegetables and noodles. I got through one and a half tacos and about half of the potatoes, and Matt ate some of them as well. There is enough food in either of these dishes to split for a lighter meal, and a heartier appetite would find either filling. As we know, this is Matt’s second time ordering the Mongolian Beef and, while much better Chinese fare can be found at Nine Dragons, for quick and inexpensive, this worked for him. While I don’t typically care for cooked fish, I was glad I tried the Spicy Fish Tacos and thought they were fine, though I can’t say I’d order them again. Overall, however, we had a good experience: Matt got his Asian food and noodles, and I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new. 🙂
