Lunch at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe

On a recent visit to Magic Kingdom, I met up with a couple of friends who skipped breakfast in their excitement to get to the park. After a quick ride on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, they were ready for and early lunch.  Since we were in Tomorrowland, we made our way over to Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe.

After placing our order and receiving our food, we grabbed front row seats to be inundated with punny songs and jokes by Sonny Eclipse. One of my friends ordered the Barbecued Pork Sandwich, which comes with a choice of Apple Slices, Green Beans, or French Fries. This sandwich is fairly standard menu fare around property, and usually the top choice when pitted against a burger or nuggets for Matt. In fact, he ordered this last year, and I opted for the Green Beans with my lunch that day (which I’ll note were a bit overcooked for my liking, but still a nice choice if you’re French-fried out).

Since I had eaten a filling breakfast a few hours prior at the Grand Floridian Cafe, and since the menu isn’t all that exciting, I ordered the Kids’ Chicken Nuggets. The kids’ portion comes with 4 nuggets and is served with grapes, carrot sticks, and kid-sized beverage, but other items are available on request, so I opted for fries instead of carrot sticks. I also received a small bottle of Dasani. There’s not really much to say about nuggets and fries at Disney, really. If you’ve had them, you know what to expect, and sometimes they hit the spot. They were hot and fresh, though, which is always good.

My other friend ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, which features Herb-marinated Chicken, American Cheese, and Bacon with choice of Apple Slices, Green Beans, or French Fries. This one is a far cry from what they were serving three years ago – which was literally a plain, barely-if-at-all-seasoned piece of chicken on a bun. The veggies you see were added at the toppings bar.

Overall, while not the most exciting menu, everyone liked what they had ordered. The restaurant had opened shortly before our arrival, so the food coming out was fresh, and we all know that can really make or break your meal. We had a nice time shaking our heads and the corny jokes Sonny was telling, and we were fueled for more time navigating the park.

When you find yourself at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe, do you have a go-to menu item?

  1. Somehow we end up going to Cosmic Ray’s a lot. I guess it is because we can never agree on what to eat and the place has something for everyone. I think I have tried most everything they have, but nuggets usually ends up being the easiest thing for me.

  2. For me it always seems to be Cosmic Ray’s or Columbia Harbour House. I prefer the latter, but I tend to only visit either when family and friends are in town for the reason you mentioned (plus we tend to let them pick). 🙂

  3. When the kids were young this was the easiest place to make everyone happy and eat at the same time. I loved it because I could get a side of green beans and mashed potatoes and call it a meal. There are only so many hamburgers, fries and nuggets and barbequed meats I can handle on one trip. I really don’t want to eat salads every meal while on vacation.

  4. I definitely remember this space more as a kid. But I agree with you – burgers, fries, and nuggets can only go so far! I will say that Disney has been doing better with their salads, and as a local who typically has salad for lunch daily, I welcome them. But I can’t say the same when I’m on my own vacations outside of WDW! 😊
