Lunch at Splitsville

Over the weekend, I stopped by Splitsville at Disney Springs for a quick lunch and to watch some football. I placed an order for an item I had very much enjoyed in the past: The Alberto. It’s one of the items from their sushi menu and is described as “no rice, just lean protein and veggies. Spicy tuna and avocado rolled in thinly sliced cucumber and served with lemon ponzu sauce.” This is what arrived. We’ll get to a comparison photo from the first time I had it momentarily.

Morimoto Asia Set to Open September 30

Morimoto Asia, a highly anticipated collaboration between Chef Masaharu Morimoto and Patina Restaurant Group, is pleased to announce a scheduled opening date of September 30, 2015 as Downtown Disney nears its transition to Disney Springs. The Japanese master chef’s first pan-Asian dining experience will showcase flavors from across the Asian continent, all with Morimoto’s creative touch.

Morimoto Asia’s eye-catching, 36-foot tall, two-story layout has been designed by STUDIO V Architecture. It includes lounges, dining spaces, and an exhibition kitchen that allows guests a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the culinary action. The second-level sushi bar and lounge have a separate entrance. Morimoto Asia will debut as part of The Landing, one of four neighborhoods in the new Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort.

“This has been a project of passion for our team and Chef Morimoto. We can’t wait to open our doors to everyone visiting Disney Springs this fall and beyond,” said Nick Valenti, restaurateur and CEO of Patina Restaurant Group.

“Disney Family Culinary Adventure” Coming to The Contemporary Resort

Guests can learn the culinary secrets of Disney Chefs with the “Disney Family Culinary Adventure,” according to the Disney Parks Blog. Starting July 8th, guests 9 and older can visit the Contemporary Resort and spend time with Disney Chefs, cook, and enjoy a five-course dinner along with beer and wine (for those 21+, of course) in the kitchen.

The evening adventure starts at 5p.m. with an introduction to the catering kitchen. Capped at 30 guests, they are invited to put on aprons, hats, and gloves before being divided into five groups. Each station demonstrates a technique, ranging from making homemade butter to fresh pasta. Chef Frank Brough notes, “It’s a guided experience but they do everything from making cheese and butter to rolling out pasta and breaking down a whole beef tenderloin.”

New Retail and Dining Announced for Disney Springs

New retail and dining experiences are making their way into Disney Springs! Of course, we’re excited for everything that’s in store for us, but first let’s take a look at the dining options that were just announced!

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., March 12, 2013 – With a flowing spring as a centerpiece, Disney Springs will feature four outdoor neighborhoods including the two shown in an artist’s conceptual rendering. The Town Center (lower portion of the image) will offer one-of-a-kind shopping and dining experiences along a promenade while The Landing (upper portion of the image) will include inspired dining and beautiful waterfront views.© Disney

According to the Press Release (PDF), here’s what’s been announced:

Edison: Inspired by The Edison venue in Los Angeles, this lavish “Industrial Gothic” -style restaurant, bar and nighttime destination is themed to a 1920s-period power plant, recalling an exuberant era of invention and imagination. It will feature exceptionally good classic American food, craft cocktails and live entertainment including cabaret and music.

Sprinkles: The world’s first cupcake bakery, as named by Food Network and others, serves up handcrafted cupcakes, slow churned ice cream and homemade cookies. Their innovative Cupcake ATM satisfies sweet-toothed epicureans 24/7.

Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza: Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza is a modern day “pizza joint” known for its custom-built artisanal pizzas, freshly made salads, blood orange lemonade and s’more pies. The fast-casual restaurant features an interactive assembly-line format that allows guests to customize their pizza, choosing from over 40 fresh, artisanal toppings – all for one price. The generously sized, 11-inch pizzas are “fast-fired” in a blazing hot open-flame oven and ready to enjoy in just 180 seconds.

Vivoli Gelateria: Vivoli Gelateria serves expertly crafted gelato made with fresh, seasonal ingredients, panini sandwiches and espresso drinks.

Tea Traders Café by Joffrey’s: Tea Traders Café by Joffrey’s specializes in premium loose-leaf teas (hot, iced, blended) featuring customs blends, accessories and packaged teas from all over the globe; created to go or for a tea experience in the café.

Lunch at Kona Cafe

With Spring Break still going on and park-adjacent resorts limiting parking to guests with reservations, we knew we’d have to make a dining reservation at the Polynesian Resort Village in order park there and gain (convenient) access to Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto. (If you don’t have a reservation, you’ll be asked to park in the Magic Kingdom lot.)

Kona Cafe

Apart from breakfast last summer, it’s been over two years (!) since our last visit to Kona for dinner, and nearly 4 years (!!) for lunch. We started out meal with beer, of course. Matt ordered the Kona Longboard Island Lager, while I had the Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale.

While looking over the sushi items, I noticed a Crab Rangoon Roll and pointed it out to Matt. Crab (Krab) Rangoon is one of those guilty pleasure items we like to order when we get takeout, so we were intrigued on how it would translate into sushi. It’s described as Crab Salad rolled in Nori, Tempura Fried, and served with Fried Won Tons and Eel Sauce.

Matt and I have attended the past two years (be sure to check out our 2014 and 2013 reviews!), and I have to say, if you’re a fan of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, this event is a must-do. Tickets and overnight packages are available now for the Classic, which will be hosted on October 30th and 31st.
